The 5 Step Process to Landing Your First Client

[00:00:00] Hello, and welcome back to the If She Did It Podcast. I am so excited to be back with you all. I really missed you, but I needed to take a little break before we rolled into 2022 and we’re starting this year off with a brand new season.

[00:00:14] It’s going to have a really big focus on the beginner entrepreneur. It’s not going to be solely for the beginner entrepreneur. But most episodes will be, which I’m really excited about. We’re going back to my roots what I started my business doing. And today’s episode, what we’re kicking off this season with is the five-step process to landing your first client, and I’m super stoked to bring this to you.

[00:00:36] I think there’s a lot of juiciness in there now. Before we dive in, I do want to give you a heads up that whenever you listen to an episode and you share a screenshot of that episode on Instagram and you tag me @ifshediditpodcast and even @BeckyFeigin one or the other or both, you will be entered to win a Starbucks coffee on me each week. And every time that you share on your Instagram Stories, you get re-entered each week. And when you leave a review of the podcast, you also will be entered. So very exciting. I will say that sometimes reviews take a while to pop up. So if you want to make sure that I see it, send me a screenshot of that review.

[00:01:15] But that’s something that I want to share with you. And then another thing is I have a brand new freebie that’s called How to Slay Your First Year in Business. It works perfectly with these episodes that are coming out that I’ve heard some amazing responses to thus far, and I’m really stoked about it. So that’s going to be linked in the show notes. So make sure to snag that.

[00:01:32] And you know, let’s just dive in because I’m super stoked. We’re going to have an amazing year together, and let’s make this year memorable.

[00:01:40] Welcome to the If She Did It Podcast with your host, business coach, and business bestie Becky Feigin. This is your one-stop-shop for all things business growth, energetic alignment, strategy mindset, and a fun touch of spirituality. Nothing is off-limits here, and you’re bound to leave every single episode inspired, excited, and ready to take massive action in your business. This podcast was created to help create more badass female CEOs and help you see that business gets to be simple, strategic, and fun. Now let’s dive in.

[00:02:12] Let’s get into it. So we are going to dive right in with the five-step process to landing your first client. Now, I want to be really clear with you guys from the jump. This isn’t a quick wins type of thing. I mean, you’d be surprised how quickly you can land a client when you really put your all into it, but it is going to take work.

[00:02:33] So I want to be really, really clear with you all on the fact that it is going to take work. And that’s OK. You know, like, that’s phenomenal. Work is important, but don’t imagine that this is going to happen overnight because something that’s really, really important is that you need to have a community to sell to.

[00:02:51] So if you’re starting from scratch, know that it’s going to take a little bit of time. It’s it doesn’t have to take too long. I’ve had clients that, you know, start up their business and in a couple of weeks, less than a month, they’ve already landed their first client, so it’s completely possible to happen quickly. But I just want to give you that preface that warning that it does take work, it does take time. Now another thing is I’m a firm believer that Instagram is the best platform to kick off your business on.

[00:03:17] I believe that you get to a point where you build out an omnipresence. They actually have a higher-level mastermind that’s focused on creating an omnipresence. But I really, really believe that it’s important to start on one platform, and I think Instagram is the platform for that. So I just want to be really clear with you all on that, that we are going to be focusing on Instagram here. That being said, other than the first step which you can transfer to another platform-based, you’ll see what I mean by that.

[00:03:46] Everything can be transferred to another platform. You can transfer the steps that I’m giving you to landing your first client to other platforms. That being said, when I give you examples, I’m going to be referencing Instagram, so I want to be clear on that. So let’s dive in.

[00:04:01] We’re talking about the five-step process to landing your first client. Step number one, starting simple, you got to have a killer Instagram bio. When somebody comes onto your profile to decide if they’re going to follow you, then they get warmed up to you and all that good, juicy stuff. They’re going to be looking at your Instagram bio, so what do you need an Instagram bio to make it really, really killer? First of all, we need a really dope profile photo. I want you facing head-on. If your business is like an agency, you’re not the only one working for it, you know, then if you want to, you can have like a company photo or a logo or something like that.

[00:04:44] But if you are the face of your company, even if you are building an agency, but right now it’s just you. I would really encourage you to make your face the face of the business, for now, something that people are really disconnecting from as we go deeper into this online business age is the idea of calling yourself an agency, but being a one person show and like committing like, We love this.

[00:05:10] We we we you’re a you like. It’s one of you own that there’s nothing wrong with it. It makes you that much more relatable and that much easier for others to feel connected to. So as much as possible, your photo, your profile photo is your picture. Now, when it comes to your username, I would encourage you to have your name in your username.

[00:05:30] People once, especially once they connect with you if they search your name and they can’t find you because they forgot what your username is, but they know you by your name. They’re never going to find you. They’re probably just going to give up. So I would really, really encourage you to have your name in your username if you are a mindset coach. It can be mindset coach Stacey, right? Like, you could do something like that if you’re really tied to your business name, that’s fine. If that’s like an alter ego or something or you’re building an agency, but otherwise, it would encourage you to have your name in there, then the next piece is the bold piece that usually says the name, right?

[00:06:01] So you can’t put your name in there, but that is an SEO-friendly section of your bio, so you really want to make it searchable. So, for example, in mind, it says the business coach. When I first started, I was solely working with beginners, so it was a business coach for beginners, and so many beginners would find me that way.

[00:06:15] So make that a really searchable term. Ok? And then in your bio itself? Now, the typical run-of-the-mill way to do this is having an I help statement, I help blank with blank so that blank so you share who you help, how you help them, and why it’s valuable that you’re helping them in that way. Right. That’s what you’re wanting to put in there.

[00:06:35] Now that is one way to do it. That is still how my bio is set up. However, you can also do it with bullet points where you bullet. The most important thing that you do for your clients, which are known for that kind of thing, you can have fun with your bio and make sure that it’s very clear from that bio who you help, how you help them, and what the transformation is going to be when they work with you.

[00:06:54] If you have enough space, another really great thing to do is put an authority piece in there. So for me, I really lean into my journalism degree and my coaching, so I have the fact that I have a journalism degree in my Instagram bio. Maybe you have the expertise or you’re a certified coach or something like that. Those would be good things to put in your bio because it makes you stand out as truly an expert and an authority. So that’s why you would have that. And then the last thing you always want is to have a link in your bio.

[00:07:20] So my links to a freebie, I actually have a full link in biotech, some multiple things, and that I have a call to action for that link in my bio. So having a call to action for the link in your bio is really important. This is a great way to consistently bring people into your space. Now this that being said, if you don’t have a freebie yet, it is not required to have a freebie to land a client, OK.

[00:07:46] And I do think that creating a freebie and building an email list is important and I can create a separate episode on that process, but that is not required to land a client. So that is not in this process. So that being said, if you do not have a freebie, something that you can link is you could set up a calendly account and I’ll actually link my affiliate code for calendly in the show notes so that you can go sign up if you want to. That being said, link something like calendly and say, Book a discovery, call with me or something else, you know, based on the number of available characters you have left, but a book like encouraging them to book a call with you, a free call so that they can turn into a client, right? So that’s a great option for me to have in your bio, but that’s going to be really important.

[00:08:33] And when somebody looks at your bio, it’s the first thing that they see. You want to call them in right, you want to show them what you can do for them. Now another piece I like to consider is Instagram Story highlights as part of your bio section. It’s something people see first. The really important thing to have in there is a My Story tab. Now, if you go to my Instagram, you’re going to be able to see my story. Check it out.

[00:08:52] Basically, what I would recommend that you do is you create a storyline of, what got you started as an entrepreneur, how you got to where you are today, and where you are today. Basically your story to your current situation and use photos from the times that you’re sharing the story and put text. Don’t speak about it. Put text. I promise you, people are going to be ten times more likely to consume it if it’s all text for something like that. Another thing if you’ve had clients before a client testimonial tab, Instagram Story highlight is really important as well.

[00:09:25] Other things would be like your tips and tricks highlight, client results, client testimonials. I already mentioned things like that are really, really important, but if nothing else, my story highlight is so important. Ok, so now we’ve gone overstep one having a killer Instagram bio. Who knew that would take me so long to get through four geeze? Step two Build a personal brand that is relatable.

[00:09:45] Now I’m going to have a different episode this season called How to create a Brand That Attracts Dream Clients Ready to Buy. So we’re going to dive deeper into branding there. But essentially, what this step two is about is building a personal brand that is relatable. So you want to think about what makes you relatable, what is going to make people obsess over you and love you and feel like they can connect with you?

[00:10:06] What stories do you have that are going to relate to others? And this is also a concept that is like branding is so deep and so important, and it’s so much more like your logo and your colors and your fonts. And this is something that we’re going deep into in the Abundant Business Academy, which is the beginner program that I’ve actually revamped. It’s more affordable than ever. I’m really excited about it.

[00:10:27] It’s not launched yet, but the link, if you want to apply early and get a bunch of bonuses and stuff, the link to the application will be on the show notes for you. So I just want to make that note. But building a personal brand that is relatable is so important. So like I said, I want you to think about the things that make you you, that make you unique, that make you stand out and share that in your content and create stories around. What’s built you into who you are today, so I share stories that turn into educational pieces around a business that goes back to like my concert-going days, my horseback riding days, my college days when I was getting my degree in journalism, even like the beginning of my business.

[00:11:08] Sharing those stories I like to share on Instagram Stories, I like to share my dog. I like to share about my anxiety and depression because people really connect with me on that. So sharing pieces of you connect people to you and then they feel like they can relate to you, and they feel safe to open up to you, which is going to lead to dream clients. So that’s a really important piece of building that personal brand that’s relatable.

[00:11:31] Step three is creating an offer to sell. Now, this can be something simple. This could be as simple as an intensive one-on-one session if you’re a service provider. This could be as simple as an hourly rate to get started with 10 hours of my support doing x y z like you can make this really simple to get started. Things that you need to know when it comes to having the offer to sell, you need to be very clear of who your dream client is, what their point a is, and what their Point B is so that you can take them through that process and you can speak to their point A and there point B. When you create content to sell your service, you need to be really clear with the point.

[00:12:10] At Point B, it’s like the transformation. What is the transformation that you are providing to your dream client? That is really, really important. So I want you to get super clear on what you want that offer to look like now. If you’re like, hold the phone, Becky. Like what? Like, create an offer like there’s got to be more to it. I mean, at the end of the day, there is, we’re talking, although it’s going to take time to build this up and land a client.

[00:12:35] I’m trying to give you this most simple. Step by step process to get you there. That being said, if you want to dive deeper into creating an offer to sell and how to create that offer, I do have a master class that I ran last year that was really awesome all about creating a signature offer. And I’ve not brought it out of the vault since then, but I’m actually going to have a link in the show notes for you to snag the replay of the masterclass, and it’s only going to be $22, so it’s going to be a steal of an option to get that signature offer built. And yeah, so if you want that, you can go snag that I’m going to have so many goodies for you in the show notes. But what do you expect? It’s a kicked off episode for the fourth season of the podcast.

[00:13:22] Obviously, we’re going ham for you. So go snag that if you want more depth and more guidance in creating a signature offer. But really, at the end of the day, this can be so simple you can create a one on one long term coaching program. You can create an intensive. It really depends on what you want to start with, but you want to create an offer to sell. Ok. And again, just to repeat myself, get really clear on what that transformation is and sell the transformation.

[00:13:51] Yes, people care about, OK, what’s the price, what’s included all those things? But the most important piece is leaning into the transformation that you are going to provide for your dream client. Ok, so now you would think that step five, you would think that step four is to sell. Before we get to that, we have step four, which is relationship building. Relationship building is crucial. So you should probably, quite frankly, even be doing this at like step two A.. You know what I mean? Like, this is so important.

[00:14:18] You want to be relationship-building from the start. When you get new followers, I want you to start conversations with them, connect with them, not to try and sell to them immediately, not to like wean them out, but to just get to know them and build a relationship with them. One of the worst pieces of advice that I got when I started my business was to try and sell immediately.

[00:14:37] Screw that you want to build acquaintances. You want to build relationships through your DM conversations that is going to lead to people trusting you. People seeing how valuable and dope you are and when you release an offer, they are snagging so ready to buy. So ready to buy now a little side note to prep and warm up your audience to be ready to buy when you release the thing that you’re creating as you’re creating your offer. I want you to tease it. I want you to make posts on your Instagram Stories about how you’re creating your first offer and you’re so excited about it.

[00:15:14] And this is what to expect if or Instagram Story, where it’s like if this is who you are and this is the transformation that you’re looking for. Keep your eyes open because something’s coming. Those kinds of teasing Instagram Stories are going to be fabulous. I also want you to keep in mind that if you are having a conversation with someone, you’ve built this relationship and you’re getting to know each other and they’re opening up to you and you come to find out that they’re a dream client and your offer would be perfect for them. There is nothing wrong with providing a personal invitation to said intensive program service, whatever it is prior to publicly launching. And then here’s the kicker if they end up snagging a spot early, you can screenshot their DM of being so excited about it shared on your Instagram Stories and saying early snagging spots earlier.

[00:16:02] That was a terrible example, but you know what I mean like snag a spot. Early spots are going quick, like a dream client already got their spot kind of a vibe, teasing and fun when mixed together. We love it.

[00:16:15] Also, can you guys tell I drink coffee in the afternoon? I’m like on speed dial right now. Like rushing. It’s crazy. I’m just excited. Like, This is my shit, you guys. I love helping entrepreneurs land their first clients, and I just love that I’m recording this episode.

[00:16:31] Ok, so you have a killer Instagram bio. You’ve built a personal brand that’s relatable. You’ve created an offer to sell. You are relationship building, getting to know people connecting, and then we’ve got that fifth step. Sell the damn thing. That’s it. Sell the damn thing. So we’re on to step five, which is sell the damn thing. How do you do it? So first step. Announce your new offer. Break down on an Instagram post. All the details. All the details.

[00:16:58] What is it? Who’s it for? Why do they need it? What’s the transformation? What’s the investment? What’s included? Bam. Put it there. Link in Bio to book a discovery call or snag your spot. Bam DM me for if you have more questions and then you want to start creating content on your Instagram Stories, on your Instagram feed, talking more in depth to help your audience become problem aware and understand that there is a solution that you can provide for them.

[00:17:26] Ok, now keep in mind that I want to be very clear about what I’m about to say. So this is kind of an aside, but launching. You hear people talk about launching all the time. I am not necessarily teaching you like a launch process as much as I’m teaching. You put it out there and run. Now that being said, the reality is when you understand what a launch is, launching is simply an extended period of promotion for an offer or a product or a service. So realistically, in some ways, you are launching right now, but I am not walking you through a full- on launch marketing strategy right now.

[00:18:00] I want to be clear on that because like I said, we’re bringing you through the simplest step by step process to learning your first clients. We can create a launch strategy in the future. Right now, we are just trying to land you some clients without a full-on launch strategy. Ok, because otherwise, we would be here for five hours.

[00:18:16] So you want to be creating content, speaking to the transformation, speaking to who this person who this offer is perfect for, why they need it. Sharing stories that lead to this is why I created this program. Different things like that. So that is all going to be extremely, extremely important. You need to make sure that you’re consistently selling your offer if you don’t get a bite on the first day, the second day, the third day, the fifth day you have to keep going.

[00:18:45] You keep going until you land a client. My girl, my boy, whoever’s listening, my person keep going. Never stop. Never stop. Ok. You need to continue to sell consistently until you land a client. Do not give up. That is one of the worst things I ever did when I first started my business. If I didn’t get a bite in the first two days, I was like, Oh my God, I’m a failure and I would just stop. Don’t do that. Keep selling consistently. You will land a client, OK, I guarantee you.

[00:19:14] Now, if you want support with this and you want to go through this process, but in more depth, the Abundant Business Academy is going to be perfect for you. So again, the application has a little bit more detail. The sales page isn’t finished yet, but the application is a little bit more detailed. Go apply. You’re going to get a bunch of bonuses for applying early, including a 90 minute one on one session with me first dibs on the VIP upgrade, which there’s not going to be a lot of VIP upgrades available. You’re going to get access to a couple of additional courses you’re going to get. I believe it’s close to a thousand dollars in bonuses, and the program doesn’t even cost a thousand dollars.

[00:19:51] So go, go, apply. Just trust me. Go apply. It’s can be phenomenal. But other things the freebie is that I mentioned at the beginning of this episode it’s going to be available in the show notes. That is going to be super helpful for you. If you want to sign up with Calendly, my affiliate link is going to be in the show notes. My Instagram is going to be in the show notes, so definitely reach out and connect with me.

[00:20:16] And if you enjoyed this episode, leaving a five star review would mean the world to me. And if you want a Starbucks coffee on me, tag me on Instagram that you listened to this episode, and I feel like I kind of ended that in a weird way.

[00:20:32] So just as a final refresh of everything you have your killer Instagram bio, you build a personal brand that is relatable. You create an offer to sell your relationship build and then you sell the damn thing. And like I said, I want to encourage you to sell, sell, sell. You’ve got this nothing to be afraid of. You’ve got to keep selling. And maybe I’m going to create a whole episode on selling because I know it feels really uncomfortable for new entrepreneurs, but this is a really amazing starting point. So go for it. Go all in. Go take action. And I will see you next week on the If She Did It Podcast.
